Ofcom Awards Four New Community Radio Licences

Ofcom today announces the award of four new community radio licences.

Community radio services typically cover a small geographical area and are provided on a not-for-profit basis focusing on the delivery of specific social benefits to enrich a particular geographical community or a community of interest.

Ofcom has awarded community radio licences to:

  • Academy FM, Ramsgate, Kent
  • Academy FM, Folkestone, Kent
  • Radio Sunlight, Gillingham, Kent
  • Rye FM, Rye, East Sussex

Details of the four new community radio stations are as follows:

Academy FM (Thanet)

Academy FM will broadcast from the Marlowe Academy in Ramsgate and serve the communities of Thanet. There will be numerous opportunities for pupils, students and members of the community to take part in the service. Academy FM will promote social gain and broaden listener choice.

This station will broadcast from Folkestone Academy and bring a community radio service to the entire community. Academy pupils as well as other students and members of the community will be offered opportunities to broadcast or help run the service, and be offered training. The station will aim to unite, support, involve and serve the Folkestone community.

Radio Sunlight will be a community-led and managed radio station broadcasting to the people of Gillingham and surrounding areas of the Medway. The station will broadcast information about local events and services and promote discussion about local issues as well as providing music, entertainment and arts programmes.

Rye FM will provide a community radio station for the town of Rye and surrounding villages. Broadly focused, the station will aim to reflect the interests of all sections of the community with special attention paid to youth inclusion and rural regeneration.

Licences are awarded for a five-year period.

A statement setting out the main determining factors for the award of the four community radio licences referred to above will be available shortly from the Ofcom website.
